Building Construction and Materials
project 1 - Famous Architect's Building

Individually, the students need to choose a famous architect and his astounding work, and
identify five architectural building materials and two structural building materials based on the case study.
Students are also required to study on the ideas, concept and properties of the selected materials used in relation to the building design and construction.
The findings need to be nicely composed into two A3 papers which include the following information:
-
A brief background of the architect.
-
Historical background of the chosen building.
-
Clear images and information of five architectural and two structural building materials.
-
Relevant images of the chosen building (floor layout, elevations, three-dimensional perspective etc.
-
Materials’ analysis and selection in relation to the building’s design concept/theme.
-
Overall conclusion on the choice and application of materials on the chosen building.
Learning outcome of the module:
- Illustrate architectural forms and space through visualization and expression of space in the form of freehand drawing.
project 2 - Construction Detailing of Building Elements
In this project, seven students are assigned in a group to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding on building construction through drawings. It emphasizes more on the detailing of building elements to help the students developed awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between design and technical knowledge. A success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process. Hence, this project gave the students on the importance of understanding the construction technical details and building design.
All groups need to comply the following requirements for submission:
1. Floor plans
2. Wall section (from foundation to roof)
3. Building section (1 no.)
4. Elevations (1 no.)
5. Roof section (partial)
6. Door details: plan view, section, and elevation
7. Window details: plan view, section, and elevation
8. Staircase details: plan view, section, and elevation
9. Sketches on construction process (from foundation to roof)
Learning outcome of the module:
- Illustrate architectural forms and space through visualization and expression of space in the form of freehand drawing.
REFLECTION
In this module, I have learnt :
-
to express ideas through architectural graphics and modeling.
-
to interpret visual information into 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional.
-
to express ideas in the form of free-hand drawing.
Through this Design Communication module, I had the basic understanding and skills on architectural design by doing projects and drawings assigned by tutors. Although I'm new in design school, I got to learn the fundamental skills step by step by attending tutorials class and also resources provided by tutors. I appreciate the help given by my tutor, Dr. Filzani provided help for me whenever I met difficulty in doing projects.
